Defenders of Middle-earth
Preview the Heroes and Roles of The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth
“It is true that if these hobbits understood the danger, they would not dare to go. But they would still wish to go, or wish that they dared, and be shamed and unhappy. I think, Elrond, that in this matter it would be well to trust rather to their friendship than to great wisdom.”
–Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring
A great evil is spreading across Middle-earth, and none—Elves or Men, Hobbits or Dwarves—are free from its vile touch. If they are to survive this menace, the Free Peoples must band together, combining their wisdom and might to stand against the shadow creeping across the land.

Join us today as we preview three of the heroes found in The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth and three of the distinct roles they can play in your Fellowship!
Playing Your Part
With the fate of Middle-earth hanging in the balance, individuals from all of the Free Peoples have stepped forward to battle the evil forces threatening the land. As such, you have a variety of heroes to choose from when building your Fellowship, each with their own abilities and talents. As we revealed in our announcement, these talents are represented by a unique deck of skill cards that is used to determine the results of your battles and skill tests.
At the beginning of a campaign, a hero's skill deck consists of the basic skill cards, their personal hero skill cards, and the skill cards from their chosen role!
Every player begins with six basic skill cards and five skill cards unique to their hero. While these cards help establish your hero’s basic identity, you have the freedom to customize your character by choosing one of six roles at the outset of each adventure and adding the three skill cards for that role to your deck. With these cards in their deck, a hero becomes even more specialized, giving them a purpose within your group.
Whether you become your group’s Captain or support the others as a Musician, your role sets the tone for your hero from the very start of an adventure. Unlike your other skill cards, which are only revealed when your hero scouts or during a test, one of your three role skill cards is prepared before the adventure even begins, giving you access to its abilities right away. If you choose to become your group’s Pathfinder, for example, you also become a Trailblazer, moving swiftly ahead and gaining inspiration for doing so.
While certain heroes have abilities and skills that are more in sync with certain roles, this doesn’t mean you have to pick the same role for the entire campaign. A hero selects a role in the Journeys in Middle-earth companion app at the beginning of each new adventure, giving you the freedom to experiment with new roles as you play. In fact, heroes gain experience within their chosen role during a given adventure, allowing them to master skills from a variety of roles as they proceed through their quest.
We’ll take a closer look at your skill deck—including purchasing and selling skills—in a future preview!
Son of Mirkwood
Where many Elves of Mirkwood are skilled, Legolas excels: tracking down enemies, perceiving what others cannot, and moving without impediment or trace. With the world in motion, fueled by a spreading darkness, he stands ready to lend his superior talent and skill in the fight against the rising evil.
Legolas’s skill with both bow and blade make him an ideal candidate to attack for heavy damage as the group’s Hunter. Not only do his Keen Eyes allow him to target enemies an additional space away with his ranged attacks, they also let him shoot with pinpoint accuracy, ensuring that his arrows strike true. But if he is also your party’s Hunter, he can make a Precise Strike to add even more hits to his attack.
In addition to his prodigious attacks, Legolas can move swiftly to set up a well-timed ranged attack. As a Hunter, he is innately Resourceful, granting him an inspiration token that he can immediately spend to use his ability and move one space. If that’s not enough, his Tireless nature lets him do even more on his turn. Finally, as an Elf, Legolas’s Immortality affords him benefits not seen amongst other peoples, including the chance to heal his body and mind or make an even more forceful attack.
We’ll describe attacking enemies in more detail in a future preview!
Child of the Lhûn
Born in the great port city of Mithlond, Elena has watched for years as hosts of her kin take to the sea, retreating toward the Undying Lands. Nothing remains for her in these forsaken lands but the beauty of its fading. Having gathered the stories and songs of those who fled west, Elena now sets out to seek the tales of those who remain and perhaps, if she is fortunate, partake in one of her own.
As another playable hero in Journeys in Middle-earth, Elena carries the knowledge of the Elves with her wherever she goes, including all the benefits their long lives afford. This Elven Light gives her the unprecedented ability to see into her skill deck and perhaps change her fortunes in an upcoming test. This knowledge also extends to the many songs of the Elves, and as a Musician, she can inspire others to succeed at their tasks.
When performing a Travelling Song, for example, Elena can grant inspiration to herself and up to two nearby heroes. Like Legolas, this inspiration can be used to fuel her hero ability. In this case, Elena can help spread even more inspiration after she spends her own. While any Musician can play a Travelling Song, only Elena has knowledge of the Lay of Twilight. This song can put the entire party at ease, helping them recover from both the physical and mental strain of their quest.
These songs are valuable skills, of course, and it can be hard to choose the right time to play them. But the Endless Melody that seems to flow through all Musicians makes this choice a little easier, allowing someone like Elena to prepare a song directly from her discard pile. While she may not quite be the warrior Legolas is, Elena can also still be formidable in a fight. As a Child of the Lhûn, she can make a swift attack against an enemy that enters her space—and disappear just as quickly.
Destined for Greatness
Though the Dúnedain of the North were nearly destroyed, they continue to watch and guard the lands that were once their kingdom. At their head is the Chieftain, Aragorn, descendent of Isildur. In this time of survival, with new dangers threatening the North in ever greater numbers, Aragorn must rally his people, and come to the defense of all Middle-earth.
A natural leader, Aragorn is ready to help the party prepare for any situation. His mere presence is enough to give the party more options when they scout during the rally phase. But as your Captain, he makes sure that you’re Well Provisioned, giving himself and another hero a new opportunity to prepare skills. Aragorn is not one to enter new territory unprepared, and the skills he has learned as a Wanderer help him to be ready for any dangers that may lurk ahead.
Though he is capable with all manner of weapons, Aragorn’s true power lies in wisdom. Unlike some other characters, he knows when it’s best to attack and when to maintain a low profile. Those who know him as Thorongil will not be surprised that he can use his wisdom in place of another stat while in the midst of a test. As the Ranger Strider, on the other hand, he can either make a powerful attack or guard against the blows of his enemies.
Like any good leader, though, Aragorn is not afraid to Lead the Charge, often working together with the rest of the party to fight the strongest of enemies. No matter how skilled he is in battle, these acts of bravery will inevitably take their toll, but—thanks to the Gift of Men —Aragorn can easily shrug off his fear.
