The land of Westeros was torn apart by the War of the Five Kings as the armies of the Great Houses marched and met in battle. In Battles of Westeros, you recreate those battles, leading cavalry charges or holding a line of infantry. If you want to seize victory for yourself, your battlefield tactics will have to be top-notch, and one of the best ways to increase your knowledge is by reading the updated FAQ for Battles of Westeros. Download the new FAQ (pdf, 735 KB) on the support page, then read the developer’s introduction to the latest updates below.

A Word from the Developer

Battles of Westeros fans, your wait has ended.

You’ve been a dedicated fan base, and through the past couple years we've compiled a list of your most frequently asked questions and concerns. After six expansions and over thirty scenarios, it’s time to officially answer those questions.

We at FFG are proud to release the second major update to the Battles of Westeros FAQ. As with previous editions of the document, you will find numerous clarifications and errata that should help illuminate some of the nuances in the base game. You will also find a few new variant rules and a cleaner presentation of the overall FAQ. In addition, we've addressed any issues revealed in all six expansions released.

As your battles for control of Westeros rage on, please continue to contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns you find while playing. We will continue to answer any questions you have and track any rules or effects that are proving cumbersome.

Thanks for playing! Enjoy!

Jason Walden

Thanks, Jason!

You must issue orders and lead your troops to victory in every game of Battles of Westeros. Download the updated FAQ, then take command of the Lannisters of Casterly Rock, the armies of Robb Stark, or the royal Baratheon forces. Establish your claim to Iron Throne by right of conquest.

The House Baratheon Army Expansion for Battles of Westeros Is Available

“Robert...He is in my dreams as well. Laughing. Drinking. Boasting. Those were the things he was best at. Those, and fighting. I never bested him at anything.” –Stannis Baratheon

Perched atop the Iron Throne, Robert Baratheon and the allies of House Baratheon must stand ready to defend their power, for war is inevitable in Westeros. Always prepared for battle, House Baratheon sends skilled warriors, inspiring commanders, and a mysterious priestess to lead hordes of veteran soldiers into battle. With chivalrous knights, sneaky smugglers, and crafty rangers to lend their skills in battle, this Great House stands ready to meet any threat.

The House Baratheon Army Expansion for Battles of Westeros is now on sale at your local retailer and on our webstore! Containing 110 detailed plastic miniatures, this substantial expansion allows you to choose from eight stalwart commanders. You’ll also find six potent unit types with which to wage war, forming the backbone of the army. Also inside this expansion is the first Epic Battle, the monumental battle for Blackwater Bay, along with rules for Alliance battles for as many as eight players.

The Crowned Stag Rises

With new Baratheon commanders and units, the Crowned Stag is prepared to take the Iron Throne by any means necessary. March into battle alongside Renly, Stannis, or even King Robert Baratheon and other commanders from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. Complete with unique abilities to influence the battle, these leaders give Baratheon players a wealth of tactical options on the battlefield.

Meanwhile, skilled Baratheon units give you the means to smash your opponents. The Honorable Knights of Nightsong seek to test themselves in battle, refraining from taking advantage of an enemy in a weakened state, while the well-rounded Storm’s End Sentinels Pursue their adversaries. Meanwhile, the devout Army of the Light are Zealots who refuse to retreat from any battle.

Introducing Epic Battles

The bloody struggle for King’s Landing takes place in the first multi-stage Epic Battle, the Battle of Blackwater. Testing even the bravest of generals over three stages, this scenario recreates one of the largest and most important battles in the War of the Five Kings. The first Epic Battle in Battles of Westeros takes place on the stunning Blackwater map board. This new map board features terrain printed directly onto it. Wage war over a large river and fortified city, and with the Epic Battle special rules, you can use wildfire to destroy attacking ships and catapults to defend the city walls.

The House Baratheon Army Expansion also includes rules for Allied battles that allow up to eight players to join the fray. These battles are so large, you’ll need two maps to play them! Simply use the reverse side of the Blackwater map board and the map board from the core set to create a massive battlefield, then you and your bannermen can share the action.

The throne is mine, as Robert's heir. That is law." –Stannis Baratheon

Disciplined and stern, Stannis Baratheon pursues his perceived birthright with a stoic single-mindedness. None shall deter the Lord of Dragonstone from sitting the Iron Throne, even if it means pushing his own men into certain death. And with the red woman Melisandre of the Asshai at his right hand, Stannis is armed with both grim determination and dark powers. But will it be enough?

The arrival of the House Baratheon Army Expansion approaches, and with it comes a host of new options for Battles of Westeros! As the first Great House Expansion, this comprehensive box is an outstanding addition to any Battles of Westeros collection. In essence, it contains enough figures, cards, commanders and other components to put House Baratheon on par with Houses Stark and Lannister.

Last time, we looked at the concept of Epic Battles, and we saw how the Battle of Blackwater unfolds over three tense stages. Today, we’ll look at two of the eight new commanders in the House Baratheon Army Expansion, Stannis Baratheon and Melisandre. We’ll also see how their unique synergies make them a powerful combination in the heat of battle.

Cold Discipline

The elder of Robert Baratheon’s two younger brothers, Stannis is Lord of Dragonstone, a source of resentment since he feels the richer lands of Storm’s End are his birthright. Lacking the charisma of his younger brother Renly, however, Stannis must find other ways to motivate his troops.

Stannis’s attitude toward his men is based on entitlement and expectation. He is the rightful king, and they must serve him unquestioningly. This total disregard for troop morale may make Stannis a difficult man to serve, but by freeing himself of such petty considerations, Stannis opens up versatile new battlefield options for himself.

First, units under Stannis’s control may rally without paying a morale or Command cost, representing his ability to push his men to inhuman limits. In fact, he can even push them beyond their limits; once per game, Stannis may lower the morale of his House by any amount. Each friendly unit ordered that turn gains an extra attack die for every three spaces morale was lowered! Stannis’s men may hate him for it, but his highness knows how to get results.

The Red Woman

Providing the fire to complement her master’s icy disposition, Melisandre of the Asshai is the right hand of Stannis Baratheon, and she’s a devout follower of R’hllor who sees Stannis as the reborn Azor Ahai of prophecy. Many are swayed to follow her uncompromising beliefs, which have increased the numbers (and the zeal) of Stannis’s followers. She is rumored to use dark powers to dispense with those who would stand against her chosen.

Melisandre strides the battlefield, marking friendly and enemy units alike for her powerful rituals. Instead of attacking, Melisandre may place a R’hllor token on any number of adjacent non-commander units, and with eight R’hllor tokens available, she’s able to spread her powers liberally.

Then, as her Commit Ability, Melisandre may finalize the ritual, acting upon each and every R’hllor token she’s placed. Friendly units marked with the R’hllor token will find themselves cleansed by flame, their wounds closing and fallen comrades rising to fight again. Meanwhile, enemy units who witness R’hllor’s wrath quickly rethink their loyalties. Such units are subjected to a Conversion rite, which carries a chance of bringing them permanently under the control of House Baratheon!

The Will of R’hllor

As formidable as Stannis and Melisandre are separately, however, they are even more effective together. First, if Stannis is in play, he may use Melisandre’s Zone of Control as if it were his own, meaning the Baratheon player can play command tokens on Stannis’s Commander card, but order units under Melisandre’s control.

What’s more, Melisandre is the first commander in Battles of Westeros to have an “Uncommit Ability.” When her Commander card has been flipped (meaning she’s used her Commit Ability to enact her rituals of R’hllor), she can flip it back to its uncommited side whenever she ends her turn under the control of Stannis Baratheon. But since Stannis treats Melisandre’s Zone of Control as his own, doesn’t that mean she’s always under his control? Yes! In short, as long as Stannis is alive, Melisandre can potentially commit and uncommit at will, executing her potent dark magic again and again.

Keep checking back for more on the House Baratheon Army Expansion, and look for it on store shelves in just a few more weeks!

All those that deny that are my foes.” –Stannis Baratheon

The arrival of the House Baratheon Army Expansion is just a few short weeks away, and with it comes a host of new options for Battles of Westeros! As the first Great House Expansion, this comprehensive box is an outstanding addition to any Battles of Westeros collection. In essence, it contains enough figures, cards, commanders and other components to put House Baratheon on par with Houses Stark and Lannister.

That’s worth repeating. With this expansion, Baratheon’s forces are the equivalent of those of House Stark, assuming you own the Core Set and Wardens of the North...or those of House Lannister, assuming you own the Core Set and Wardens of the West. Indeed, the House Baratheon Army Expansion makes the Crowned Stag more than just a playable third faction. It makes it a true force to be reckoned with!

That’s because this massive expansion includes 110 plastic figures and bases, dozens of banners, nearly 100 cards, over 120 markers and tokens, and a detailed new game board depicting Blackwater Bay. Within the next several days, you’ll learn more about the various components of the House Baratheon Army Expansion. Today, however, we’ll focus our attention on one of the most definitive battles in the War of the Five Kings: the Battle of Blackwater.

An Epic Conflict

Given the size and contents of the House Baratheon Army Expansion, “epic” is an entirely apt description. It’s therefore appropriate that this expansion introduces, for the first time in Battles of Westeros, the concept of Epic Battles.

Epic Battles are engagements that are fought over multiple stages. The Battle of Blackwater (the Epic Battle included in the House Baratheon Army Expansion) is played over three stages, with the ultimate victory awarded to the player who wins the “best of three.”

An Epic Battle is far more than just three maps played in a row, however. Each player retains his cards and order tokens from one stage to the next, and units, commanders, and terrain overlays from a previous stage retain their positions in upcoming stages. So instead, think of each new stage of an Epic Battle as a way of introducing shifting battlefield conditions, all while a built-in game timer ratchets up the game’s tension. Over the course of an Epic Battle, new reinforcements will arrive and each faction’s fortunes will subtly change; all the while, you’re challenged to meet certain preset victory conditions before the stage ends. Will you advance to the next stage in victory, or defeat?

The first stage of the Battle of Blackwater. In it, House Baratheon must cross a river of broken and burning ships to assault a well-defended shoreline.

A River of Flame

For example, the Battle of Blackwater’s three stages are played over a total of ten rounds. The first stage (played over the first four rounds) is entitled “The Crossing,” and it challenges House Baratheon to ferry their forces across the deadly Blackwater...while it’s aflame with wildfire!

The Imp has just sprung his trap, and the Blackwater is littered with the half-sunk ships of House Baratheon. What few ships remain intact are insufficient to carry all of the Baratheon troops across; some will have to contend with randomly spreading wildfire, hopping precariously across damaged ships in a desperate attempt to establish a beachhead.

Assuming they survive this hellish crossing, the second stage (entitled “The Siege” and played over rounds five through seven) provides House Baratheon with a handful of reinforcements before requiring them to break down the gates to King’s Landing. Finally, assuming House Baratheon is still standing, the Battle of Blackwater culminates in the third and final stage, “Breaking Through.” Here, a mad dash into the inner sanctum of King’s Landing will determine the fate of the realm!

In short, the Epic Battle system provides a way for fans of Battles of Westeros to experience the most awe-inspiring conflicts from George R.R. Martin’s beloved series. Keep checking back for more on the House Baratheon Army Expansion, and look for it on store shelves in just a few more weeks!

Martin

Perched atop the Iron Throne, Robert Baratheon and the allies of House Baratheon must stand ready to defend their power, for war is inevitable in Westeros. Always prepared for battle, House Baratheon sends skilled warriors, inspiring commanders, and a mysterious priestess to lead hordes of veteran soldiers into battle. With chivalrous knights, sneaky smugglers, and crafty rangers to lend their skills in battle, this Great House stands ready to meet any threat.

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of the House Baratheon Army Expansion. With this exciting expansion, a brand new army enters Battles of Westeros for the first time!

A monumental army

March into battle alongside Renly, Stannis, or even King Robert Baratheon and other commanders from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. Complete with unique abilities to influence the battle, these leaders give Baratheon players a wealth of tactical options on the battlefield.

Smash your opponents with skillful Baratheon units.

Choose your side and reenact the deadly Battle of Blackwater.

Simply use the reverse side of the Blackwater map board and the map board from the core set to create a massive battlefield and you and your bannermen can take to the field.

As war draws near, are King Robert Baratheon and the armies of the black stag strong enough to defend the Iron Throne? Beric Dondarrion inspires local peasants to join the battle, Thoros of Myr raises fallen soldiers to fight again, and Anguy unleashes a deadly salvo of arrows that can wipe out entire units. The heroes of this expansion are sure to be noteworthy additions to the Battles of Westeros game.

In addition to the heroes, Brotherhood Without Banners introduces many other new features. Three new units, the Knights of the Hollow Hill, Lightning Lord’s Longbowmen, and True King’s Outlaws join the conflict. Since these units are truly without banners, they are activated in a new way. Brotherhood tokens are used to control the new units instead of the traditional Leadership cards. Moreover, new keyword abilities, battle plans, and skirmish cards round out the Brotherhood Without Banners supplement.

With so many new characters, rules, and scenarios, this expansion offers plenty to be excited about. A Dothraki screamed and charged the lightning lord, and the flaming sword leapt out to meet his arakh. The blades kissed and spun and kissed again. Then the Dothraki's hair was ablaze, and a moment later he was dead.” –A Storm of Swords, George R. R. Martin

Brotherhood Without Banners presents Battles of Westeros players with a new ally force of outlaws sworn to protect the smallfolk, which can supplement a primary house’s forces. This new ally force will be available in the fourth quarter of 2011, and includes new unit types, a rulebook with four new scenarios, new cards, new commanders, and even more!

Today, we will examine how Brotherhood units are controlled and activated without banners, and take a look at one of the new commanders, the leader of the Brotherhood: Beric Dondarrion.

The nobility of the cause

Having pledged their allegiance to the realm, the Brotherhood Without Banners raises no flag during their battles. They are united under a nobler mission than riding under one of the great Houses of Westeros: to fight for justice, for the inhabitants of the Seven Kingdoms.

In Brotherhood Without Banners, Brotherhood units and commanders are identified by their lack of banners, and are considered blue rank for all intents and purposes. These units do not follow normal activation rules. Instead Brotherhood tokens are used, which replace the normal banner mechanic...and eliminate the need to rally units with special effects or during the Rally Phase. Once a Brotherhood unit is ordered it does not become inactive.

A player receives a certain amount of Brotherhood tokens to use during the game. Then, during the Command Phase, after a player has ordered one or more Brotherhood units (using the necessary Order token or Leadership card), he will discard a single Brotherhood token. Since Brotherhood units do not rally, all of a player’s Brotherhood units are considered active as long as he has at least one Brotherhood token in his play area. If however, that player loses his last Brotherhood token, all of his Brotherhood units are immediately considered inactive.

Therefore, should a player possess the necessary Order tokens or Leadership cards, he could continue to order a single Brotherhood unit again and again, or spread his orders across multiple units, until he has at least one Brotherhood token remaining.

Brotherhood tokens must also be used to cancel your opponent’s attempts to make a Brotherhood unit inactive. You must discard a single Brotherhood token to cancel every such effect. However, a player can gain more Brotherhood tokens each round, or through rally effects.

To die bravely...and fight on

Beric Dondarrion, the formerly handsome Lord of Blackhaven, now the “Lightning Lord,” is the leader of the Brotherhood. Raised from the dead on several occasions by Thoros of Myr, Beric continues to lead raids and fight against those he believes harm the smallfolk. Though death has claimed many of his memories, he is still swift and forceful in combat, wielding a flaming sword against his foes.

(Click the image to see the back of Beric’s card)

Beric is a capable commander; his presence inspires the fervor of local folk who rise up to join his cause. With the Call to Arms keyword, Beric can recruit a green-ranked unit to join him and his unit on the battlefield. Further, Beric’s formidable sword has a nasty aftereffect for his targets. While meeting his foe in battle, Beric’s sword can potentially light his opponent on fire, and a level one fire token is placed in his opponent’s hex.

The Lightning Lord’s relentlessness in his undertaking to seek justice is mirrored in his commit ability, which is activated when his card is flipped. Beric can spur on his unit and Pursue an enemy...for as long as possible.

Look for more previews in the coming weeks, featuring the rules surrounding Corpse tokens, and watch for Brotherhood Without Banners to be released in the fourth quarter of 2011!

R. Martin

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Brotherhood Without Banners, an ally force expansion for Battles of Westeros! Reports of attacks on the riverlands by a marauding army have reached King’s Landing. For the sake of honor, a group of soldiers and nobles have been tasked with bringing these outlaws in to face the king’s justice...until the ever-changing politics of King’s Landing cause them to be named outlaws instead.

Sworn to protect

Brotherhood Without Banners introduces players to a new ally force that can supplement a primary House’s forces, such as House Stark or House Lannister from the Core Set, through regular play or Skirmish rules. With new unit types, a rulebook with four new scenarios, new cards, new commanders, and even more, this expansion will bring greater variety to your Battles of Westeros experience and awesome power to your House’s cause!

Ally yourself with three new commanders, sworn to protect the smallfolk against all who would harm them: Lord Beric Dondarrion, Anguy, “the Archer,” and Thoros of Myr. Dubbed the “Lightning Lord,” Beric’s sigil is a forked lightning bolt, and his weapon a flaming sword. Swift in battle, he is a leader who will stand against any enemy. Anguy is an archer with a reputation across Westeros for devastating accuracy and can avoid capture by using his surroundings to his advantage. The red priest of R’hllor, Thoros of Myr, is a formidable warrior but his greatest strength is in his ability to assist his fallen Brotherhood members...

The Brotherhood units continue the Battles of Westeros trend of representing ally forces with tan-colored miniatures. However, unlike all other Battles of Westeros sets, Brotherhood Without Banners does not include any banner or pole components, as these outlaw warriors neither answer to a liege lord nor ride under any flag. These units do not follow normal activation rules and are controlled through a new mechanic: Brotherhood tokens. Keep checking back for more information on these tokens in the coming weeks.

This expansion also features new thematic keywords, such as Call to Arms and Scrapper. Call to Arms represents the Brotherhood’s ability to incite the local peasantry to take up arms and join them on the battlefield. Scrapper is attributed to units who are stubborn and hardy fighters, aggressive even when defending.

Look for previews in the coming weeks discussing how to control Brotherhood units and the rules surrounding Corpse tokens. Then prepare to set out against injustice when Brotherhood Without Banners is released in the fourth quarter of 2011!

Born in the cruel climate of the Mountains of the Moon, the clansmen of the Stone Crows, Black Ears, and Burned Men are of a violent breed. Uncivilized, uncouth, and unrefined, these men and women live to kill, and they do it well.

Fearsome Leaders

The Tribes of the Vale expansion adds three new ally commanders to diversify your Battles of Westeros experience. Shagga, Son of Dolf is a ruthless barbarian of the Stone Crows, capable of wielding two massive battle axes better than some men handle one. Timett, Son of Timett earned his place as the Red Hand of the Burned Men by taking out his own eye. A fearless expert swordsmen, Timett rarely fails to kill anything he sets out to. Finally, Chella, Daughter of Cheyk is a vicious woman, decorating herself with the ears of her enemies.

New Units, Mechanics, and Scenarios

In addition to these new commanders, Tribes of the Vale introduces three new unit types, new keywords, new terrain types, and a rulebook with three new scenarios, aligning House Lannister with these devastating clansmen.

Similar to the Lords of the River ally expansion, the units and commanders in Tribes of the Vale are ally forces represented by tan miniatures, and can be used to supplement a primary House’s forces - such as House Lannister or, if using the Skirmish rules, House Stark.

For more on Tribes of the Vale, visit out previews: Lend Her Your Ears and An Eye for a Red Hand. The number of submissions from excited fans exceeded our expectations, as dozens of stunningly painted entries flooded in over the subsequent weeks.

A difficult decision

Our panel of judges had a difficult decision before them, but after painstakingly narrowing the entries to a few final contenders, they ultimately decided on the work of James Brown.

James painted Sandor Clegane leading a force of House Brax pikemen. Commenting that James’ work went “above and beyond,” our judges were particularly impressed by his attention to detail. Down to the dents in his war-torn shield and the burns on his scarred face, The Hound was brought vividly to life by James’ skilled hand.

Our winner will receive one copy of every Battles of Westeros release to date, including the new Tribes of the Vale expansion! Congratulations to James, and thanks to everyone who participated!

An iron brazier stood beside the king, its coals glowing a ruddy orange. Four tall pointed windows looked out to north, south, east, and west. Every clan in the Mountains of the Moon feared the Burned Men, who mortified their flesh with fire to prove their courage... Timett's fellow Burned Men were so awed by his choice of an eye that they promptly named him a red hand, which seemed to be some sort of a war chief.” -	George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

Tribes of the Vale introduces Battles of Westeros players to the dangerous clansmen, who dwell in the mountains and crags surrounding the Vale. These uncivilized warriors survive by scavenging food and supplies from travelers, using their brutal fighting styles and superior numbers to their advantage. Previously we looked at the ear-collecting warrior woman Chella and her loyal Black Ears. Now, let’s meet the deadly Red Hand of the Burned Men, Timett son of Timett.

Anyone Mad Enough to Take Their Own Eye...

The Mountains of the Moon are a hard place, breeding hard men. Timett son of Timett is no exception, earning his place as Red Hand by putting out his own eye. While some may question his mental stability, Timett is an astounding swordsmen, possessing uncanny accuracy with his remaining eye.

To reflect his precise swordplay, whenever Timett rolls a Valor symbol he can discard that die to double the amount of hits he caused. Combine this with his commit ability to change the result of any die, and you have an extremely lethal fighter.

While Timett is quite a force in his own right, the men he leads offer even more devastating potential. Imagine how much destruction Timett can bring when leading a high-rank unit. His abilities make him a commander-capturing monster.

Now, let’s take a look at how Timett’s fellow Burned Men contribute to their Red Hand’s cause.

Burning Down the Opposition

The Burned Men have the Looter keyword, which allows them to take advantage of the spoils of war. Whenever an enemy unit is eliminated, any adjacent Looter units of lower rank may place a Loot token in their hex. During the Resolve Status Conditions step of the Regroup Phase, these Loot tokens can be discarded to upgrade the Looter unit to the next higher rank.

When leading a unit of Burned Men with Timett, you can use his commander ability to help you quickly upgrade them to a red unit. Trading a valor result in for double the amount of hits gives you the chance to take out some higher-ranking units. If you manage to rank Timett’s unit up to red, it’s time to play the right Leadership card and go in for the kill.

The crows are gathering, so stay vigilant. More Tribes of the Vale information is on the march!

Today, we’re pleased to present the informative conclusion:

Step 3: Painting the Main Areas

Now it's time to add the main blocks of colour; cloaks, shields, surcoats and the like. The basic idea here is using a size 1 brush, to paint the item a base colour, but leave a little of the black showing around the edge to help it stand out. Then just add a lighter highlight colour on any raised areas, such as folds in cloth, which would naturally catch the light.

The cloak on this War Host of the North (below) is a good example of what I'm talking about. Here I've used #502 Field Drab for the base colour, and highlighted it with #222 Horse-tone Roan. The fur trim was done with #236 Horse-tone Grey and #526 Tank Light Grey.

The only reason I've used different colours for the highlights is because I had them to hand and it saved mixing up a highlight colour. However, if you don't want to go to the extra expense of buying highlight colours the same effect can be achieved just by taking your base colour and mixing a little white with it (as with dry-brushing, if you're an inexperienced painter it's worth spending a couple of minutes practising on a cheap figure).

In general, I've only highlighted the larger areas on the figures, and just painted the smaller details such as belts and bows in a single colour. The only smaller areas that I've highlighted have been the blades of weapons and the faces to emphasise them a little.

Step 4: Details and Bases

I haven't tried to paint every conceivable detail but just picked out a few of the main ones, like belt buckles, boots, gloves, and beards, using a size 0 brush. Where I did spend a few extra minutes was on the leaders, such as Gregor Clegane's surcoat and Addam Marbrands's shield, but whether you want to go to those lengths is entirely up to you.

The last area I paint is normally the base and this is just done using #230 Cammo Green as a base colour, with #125 Putrid Green dry-brushed on to add highlights.

Step 5: Dipping and Varnishing

The last stage of the painting process is what's called a 'dip'. This is done by applying a polyurethane wood-stain (available from any hardware store: Minwax Polyshades is a well known brand in the US). This comes in various shades; walnut is what I've used on my Westeros miniatures. The reason for applying a wood stain is twofold. Firstly, it pools in the recesses and crevices and gives an extra level of shading (you can see this especially well on the bases of the Stark leaders).

Secondly, it acts as a hardwearing varnish which will protect and preserve the paintwork on the minis.

The reason this technique is called the 'dip' is that when miniature painters first started using it they used to just dip the whole figure in the tin of wood-stain and then shake off the excess. However, I've found that you get much better (and less messy) results by just painting it on with a large, e.g. size 4, brush. The only problem with wood stain is that it can start to pool in unwanted areas, like at the bottom of shields. To alleviate this problem I just dry the brush off a little on a piece of kitchen tissue, and then use the brush to soak up some of the wood stain in the problem area while it's still wet.

The very final stage, at least for me, is to give the miniatures a quick spray of Testors Dullcote varnish, which gives them a matt finish as opposed to the gloss finish of the wood stain. Whether you prefer a matt or gloss finish is just a matt of personal opinion though, so I'll leave it up to you to decide.

A Final Word

You've probably noticed that the shields on my Lannister troops and some of the leaders have various emblems on them. This was done by using decals, originally available from Hobby Products GmbH. Sadly these are no longer available, however other manufacturers (for instance I know of Veni Vidi Vici Decals and Little Big Men Studios here in the UK) produce shield decals for 15mm miniatures which should work equally well.

Anyway, thanks for sticking with me and I hope that some of you have found this article useful and will be persuaded to try your hand at painting miniatures, if you haven't already.

Finally here's a list of the Cote D'Arms Paints I used and what they were used for:
Armour 232 Bronze (dry-brushed) Buckles, Sword Hilts, etc. 232 Bronze (paint on) Weapons 109 Chainmail - highlight 106 Enchanted Silver Stark Cloaks 502 Field Drab - highlight & hounds 222 Horse-tone Roan Stark Trim and surcoat 236 Horse-tone Grey - highlight and leash on hounds 526 Tank Light Grey Lannister shields, cloaks, and surcoats 129 Vampire Red (highlight with white) Lannister gold/ yellow trim 229 Dark Sand (highlight with white) Faces 506 Desert Sand - highlight 213 Flesh Hair 235 Horse-tone Brown Wood 501 British Khaki Straps and Belts 519 Chocolate Brown Leather (boots, gloves, and quivers) 524 Tan Earth Bases 230 Camouflage Green - highlight 125 Putrid Green Robb Stark's Wolf 504 Panzer Grey - highlight 533 Slate Grey Fletching on arrows and mixing highlights 101 White Horses any above Horse-tone, highlighted white
Thanks, Giles!
A guide to painting Battles of Westeros figures by Giles Dorrington

Giles’ stunningly painted Battles of Westeros figures caught the attention of several FFG employees, and he graciously agreed to provide a step-by-step guide to achieving similar results, even if you’ve never picked up a brush. In this first installment, Giles explains the tools and preparation you’ll need to get started (click any of the images in this article to enlarge them). Thanks Giles!

Straight out of the box Battles of Westeros is a great looking game, but a nicely painted set of miniatures can make it look even better. Although some Westeros players may already be accomplished painters, doubtless there are others to whom painting miniatures remains something of a 'black art'.

However, there's no real magic in painting miniatures and the purpose of this article is to show how even a relative beginner can produce good looking results with a minimum of time and expense.

Equipment

Before looking at the actual painting process, it's worth spending a moment considering the equipment you'll need. If you've already done any miniatures painting you'll probably already have suitable brushes and paints, but if not, the vast array of different types available can seem a bit daunting (not to mention expensive).

In painting the figures for this article the brushes used were synthetic artists brushes which you should be able to get from any decent art or hobby supplier (I got mine from EM4 Miniatures in the UK and they cost about two or three pounds each, depending on the size). Although a lot of articles on miniature painting will tell you to buy the best brushes available, for our purposes it's not really worth it as some of the techniques we'll be using, notably dry-brushing and painting with metallic paints, are notoriously hard on brushes. When painting the minis shown in this article the brushes used were a size 4 for undercoating and dry-brushing; a size 1 for general painting; and a size 0 for any small details.

As for the paints, except for the undercoat, dip and varnish (don't worry if you don't understand some of the terms used, they'll be explained as we go along), I've used normal acrylic hobby paints made by Cote D'Arms Paints, which are available from Black Hat Miniatures in the UK, and Scale Creep Miniatures in the US. Throughout the article I'll be mentioning the specific colours used, although equivalent colours are available from all the major paint supplies; Vallejo, Games Workshop, etc. It really doesn't matter which brand you choose, or even if you mix brands.

Everything else you might need, e.g. a sharp craft knife, kitchen tissue, etc. is readily available if you don't have it already.

Step 1: Preparation

Luckily, the miniatures in Battles of Westeros don't need a lot of preparation. Just trim off any excess flash with a sharp knife ('flash' is a term for the excess plastic that sometimes gets left from the moulding process); wash all the figures and bases in warm water with some detergent (i.e. washing-up liquid) mixed in; and then rinse it off in cold water. Washing the miniatures might seem unnecessary but it's an important step as the release agent used in the moulding process, together with subsequent handling, can leave a greasy residue which can prevent the paint from adhering properly. Once the figures are dry stick them onto the appropriate bases (I use super-glue as it sets quickly and provides a strong join).

As mentioned before, handling can leave a greasy residue on the miniature, to say nothing of rubbing off paint, so it's a good idea not to handle them too much during painting. I usually just blu-tack them to the top of old paint pots while I'm in the process of painting, but anything that you can hold comfortably will do (some people use wooden coffee stirrers).

Step 2: Undercoating and Dry-Brushing

For the undercoat I just brush an inexpensive black acrylic craft paint (I believe 'Apple Barrel' is a well known brand in the US) over everything, both the figure and the base. Don't worry too much about getting an even coverage. It doesn't have to be absolutely black all over; the important thing is to make sure that the black undercoat gets into all the cracks and crevices (I usually let the black dry and then go back and touch in any spots I've missed).

Once the black is dry, I then dry-brush all the areas of armour and chain mail with #232 Bronze. If you've not come across it before, dry-brushing is basically painting with an almost dry brush. Using a large brush, for example a size 4, put a little paint on the end and then remove most of it by wiping repeatedly on kitchen tissue; then lightly brush over the figure and you should find that the paint will only be left on the raised areas, leaving the black in the recesses untouched. Dry-brushing is great for painting armour relatively quickly and it's worth taking some time to master the technique (if you've not tried it before I'd suggest getting some cheap figures; dollar store plastic army men are ideal, to practise on).

You can see the effect of dry-brushing with #232 Bronze on this Lannister Heavy Infantry Figure, and I've also used it on the hounds of the Stark Kennelmaster (only using #222 Horse-tone Roan instead of Bronze).

Next week, Giles will conclude by explaining the processes of painting the main areas, detailing, and dipping, so be sure to join us. "I'm no maid,” Chella protested. "My sons have taken fifty ears among them."
    	- George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

The Tribes of the Vale expansion for Battles of Westeros provides House Lannister with an ally force, similar to how Lords of the River introduced House Tully as a House Stark ally. While ally forces can be mixed and matched when using custom scenarios or Skirmish rules, the included scenarios in Tribes of the Vale ally Houses Lannister with the savage clansmen.

Led by the Ear

Today we’ll look at one of these clansmen, or clanswoman to be exact. Chella, Daughter of Cheyk is the ruthless warrior from the Black Ears clan, known for the grotesque trophies its members wear around their necks. Chella, despite her small frame, is an excellent fighter, collecting more ears than many men in her tribe. Her trophies have won her the support of her tribesmen, and they rally to her whenever she displays her hideous earnings.

Chella is a remarkable commander when fielded with her Black Ears clansmen. The Black Ears tribe is known for their agile cavalry, who can find their way through crags with ease. They are also more famously known for their practice of collecting the ears of their enemies. The Collector (ear) keyword means that whenever a Black Ears unit destroys an enemy unit, they collect a number of ear trophy tokens equal to the number of spaces the morale tracker moves as a result of the kill.

These ear trophy tokens are placed on the Commander card that shares the keyword. These trophy tokens will trigger special abilities as listed on the Commander card.

Hear the Sound of Victory

To reflect Chella’s superior collection of severed ears, her Commander card gives her unit the ability to collect double the normal amount of trophy tokens whenever they eliminate a unit. Cunning players will use the ability to their advantage, and send Chella’s unit in to take care of weakened foes. Before you know it, she’ll be swimming in a sea of severed ears. Once your necklace is heavy enough, flip Chella’s card to activate her commit ability.

(Click the image to see the back of Chella's card)

If Chella has collected enough ears, and enough Black Ears units remain on the board, then the turn in which you activate her commit ability will be a savage one indeed...

Check back soon for more barbaric updates for Tribes of the Vale!
