Whether you are defending the honor of your clan in the Emerald Empire, or supporting your faction in pursuit of the Iron Throne, this winter you can claim the ultimate prize at the upcoming World Championships for Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game and A Game of Thrones: The Card Game!

These World Championship events form the pinnacle of competitive Organized Play, drawing in players from all over the world to compete at the highest possible level. In order to dedicate more space than ever to each game, the Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game Winter Court and the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game World Championship have been separated this year, taking place on their own individual weekends!

Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game players, you can fight for your clan at the Fantasy Flight Games Center in Roseville, Minnesota from November 6 – 10, 2019. A Game of Thrones: The Card Game players, the battle for the Iron Throne will also take place at the Fantasy Flight Games Center, from February 7 – 9, 2020. This winter, you will have the chance to prove yourself worthy of the title: World Champion.

We'll explore each event in more detail below, but here's a quick overview of the main events at each upcoming World Championship.

As countless battles are waged across both Westeros and Rokugan, few things are certain amidst the unrest that rules these lands. Despite the ongoing conflicts and political conspiracies, time presses on, the seasons change, and eventually, winter comes. It's during these times of hardship that your people must fight for survival—but there's also the greatest glory to be won!

Can you maintain your honor in the face of your challengers? What will you sacrifice to claim the Iron Throne or to serve your daimyō? Prepare yourself for the chaos that comes with the cold and cut through those who dare challenge you.

Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Whether you favor the churned mud and hard-won glory of the battlefield, or you test your honor in the veiled courts of Rokugan, your struggles for victory ultimately lead you to the Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game Winter Court. This year, the stakes are higher than ever before—for the first time, the World Championship is invite-only, and you must do battle to even win your seat. If you've already won your invitation to the World Championship, you can claim your reserved seat using this form, with a deadline of October 11, 2019. If, however, you have not won the glory of a seat at the most prestigious event in Rokugan, you'll have one last chance to win your place in the World Championship at the Last Chance Qualifier!

The Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game Last Chance Qualifier will take place on November 6, giving you the opportunity to win your place among Rokugan's greatest samurai. The Top 64 players in the Last Chance Qualifier are guaranteed to advance to the World Championship (split evenly across Day 1A and Day 1B), with additional seats becoming available if any reserved World Championship seats go unclaimed by their champions. Of course, even if you can't seize a place at the World Championship, there's still plenty for you to do, with side events throughout the weekend, a costume competition, and a World Championship 2020 qualifier on Sunday all available for you to play in.

Tickets for the Last Chance Qualifier go on sale on July 11, 2019 at 2:00 PM CDT (UTC –5), with a fee of $25. If you win your seat in the World Championship and choose to participate, there will be an additional $25 charge.

Once the World Championship proper begins, players will duel across two days, with Day 1A on Thursday, November 7, and Day 1B on Friday, November 8. Both of these flights feed into the highly elite Day 2 on Saturday, November 9, with the champion ultimately winning the title of Shōgun and the chance to influence the story of Legend of the Five Rings forever. Then, before the weekend ends, players will have the chance to contend for seats in next year's World Championship, with a Worlds 2020 Qualifier taking place on Sunday, November 10.

We don't have much to share on the prizes for the Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game Winter Court at this point, but we'll have much more information on these prizes as we draw nearer to the event. Importantly, the Prize Wall will be returning to this year's Winter Court, and players will be able to use all tickets earned at this year's Winter Court on the Prize Wall! (Koku earned at Kotei events cannot be spent at the Winter Court Prize Wall.)

A Game of Thrones: The Card Game

Meanwhile, in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, the battle for the Iron Throne rages on, engulfing mighty lords and lowly peasants, spreading from the sands of Dorne to the icy fastnesses north of the Wall. With a full weekend dedicated to A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, players from around the world will have the opportunity to come together and celebrate everything that sets this game apart. Giving A Game of Thrones: The Card Game its own weekend also allows more room for participants, with a total of 360 seats being available.

The main event for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game (Joust format) will begin on Friday, February 7 for Day 1A and Saturday, February 8 for Day 1B. Representing the factions of the Seven Kingdoms, players will use deadly schemes, cunning tactics, and brute strength to make their way to the Day 2 cut on Sunday, February 9. Running alongside the Joust tournament, players can also participate in the Melee tournament, which also runs with opening flights on Friday and Saturday. Those players who outwit and outperform the rest of the competition at their tables will then meet on Sunday for the final Melee showdown.

In addition to Joust and Melee, there will be a number of side events available for players to participate in throughout the World Championship weekend. The Ironborn-themed multiplayer variant, Kingsmoot, will be available for groups to play, as well as draft pods. Stay tuned for more information on these and other side events!

As well as the chance to dedicate a full weekend to A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, the February event date also gives players the opportunity to pay the iron price for their World Championship entry by waiting to win a Prime Championship before purchasing a ticket. Registration for the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game World Championship begins July 11, 2019, at 2:00 PM CDT (UTC –5), where half of the seats (of the first batch) will become available. The other half of the first batch of seats will become available twelve hours later at 2:00 AM CDT (UTC -5). The second batch of the seats will be made available at a later date once the Prime Championships are underway and players have had more chances to win their seat. The price point for all tickets is $50, but if you have won a reserved seat, you can claim your seat now! The deadline for claiming these reserved seats is January 4, 2020.

And of course, even if you are unable to attend in person, we'll be streaming the entirety of the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game World Championship with FFG Live on both Twitch and YouTube for you to enjoy!

Watch the 2015 World Championships Live

The 2015 World Championships for Fantasy Flight Games Organized Play take place November 4th through November 8th, and we want you to be a part of the action!

On November 4th, hundreds of the best players around the world will begin arriving in Roseville, Minnesota to participate in the 2015 World Championships. They will compete against each other in thrilling games throughout the week, vying for the honor of being named World Champion, a chance to help design a card, and a host of other unique, one-of-a-kind prizes. While not everyone can attend, we are streaming games all five days, including the final match of each World Championship, giving those at home a way to be a part of the biggest event of the year.

Live Coverage

From November 4th through the 8th, we’ll be streaming live games for all of our World Championships on Twitch.tv. Tune into our channel, FFGLive, to watch your favorite games. It all begins shortly before 10:30 am on Nov. 4th! Find each games’ schedule on our World Championship page.

Each day we will be featuring games that include National and former World Champions, prominent players in the community, and exciting decks, squadrons, armies, and fleets. In addition, all of our World Championship finals will be streamed, allowing you to see not only who wins, but how they did it. Live commentating by FFG staff and big names in the community will keep you informed from start to finish. Watch thrilling games from the comfort of your own couch, or ask your store to display the event while you play in a local tournament!

Details on the A Game of Thrones Draft World Championship

The 2015 World Championships are a few short weeks away, and we want players to be as prepared for their tournaments as possible. If you’re planning on attending the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Draft World Championships, make sure to read this article before packing for your trip. You will find details on the tournament structure and everything you need to know about the event below!

2015 World Championships

The 2015 World Championships will take place November 4-8 in Roseville, MN. These five days contain the pinnacle of competition for each of our Organized Play games, featuring the best players in the world, awesome prizes, live streaming, side events, and more. All tournaments for this year are sold out. However, interested players can follow along with all the action on our Twitch stream, and anyone interested in attending next year should keep their eyes on our website next spring for announcements concerning the 2016 World Championships. A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Draft World Championship

The 2015 A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Draft World Championship is the first premier draft tournament in FFG’s history! Below is some information about the event to help players prepare:

Players registered for the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Draft World Championship will be required to pay an additional fee of $20 when picking up their World Championship badge.

All draft product will be provided the day of the tournament. Players should not bring their own draft product to the tournament. Players will need to supply their own tokens and card sleeves.

Swiss rounds for the tournament will be split into two three-round halves. Each half, players will be divided into pods of eight players to draft their deck for those three rounds. After drafting cards, players will have twenty-five minutes to build and register their deck. After building their deck, players will be paired against players within their pod for the following three rounds. At the end of six Swiss rounds, the Top 8 ranked players will draft one final time and use those decks during elimination rounds to determine the first ever A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Draft World Champion!

Rankings for the tournament will be determined with the same method as all other A Game of Thrones: The Card Game tournaments, based on overall record and then strength of schedule tiebreakers. Players will be seeded into pods for the second draft based on their ranking at the end of the third round with the eight highest ranked players making up one pod, the next eight highest ranked players making up a second pod, etc. All rules in the FAQ and tournament rules will be in effect, included the Restricted List, unless overruled by the draft rules.

Players will be required to register all cards that they draft, but will be permitted to change the contents of their deck between rounds. Players can switch cards in their deck with only other cards drafted during that draft.

The two draft sets for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game—Ice and Fire and Westeros—will be used for the two three-round halves, one set for each half. The Top 8 draft will use one of those two draft sets a second time, determined at random the day of the tournament.

Please Note: The start time for the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Draft World Championship has moved forward one hour to 11:00 am.

New A Game of Thrones FAQ and Tournament Rules are Available

The king’s word in Westeros is law. Those who do not follow the rules are traitors to the crown and banished from the land or lose their head. Those who contest for the Iron Throne are truly fighting for the power to turn their words to law.

Don’t let another take your rightful place on the throne, read the new FAQ (pdf, 2.3 MB) and tournament rules (pdf, 760 KB) before venturing to the 2015 World Championships or your next A Game of Thrones: The Card Game tournament.

These changes will go into effect on October 28th, 2015.

A Word from the Developers

Hello A Game of Thrones players,

This one is, as they say, “for the fans.”

By many accounts, the first edition card pool is in a relatively deep, interesting, and well-balanced place. There are a small number of outlier cards that currently strain the metagame, and with this FAQ update we are addressing those cards to prepare the environment for the first edition’s final World Championship and Stahleck Championship tournament season.

In the North American Joust Championship at Gen Con, we saw two Dragonpit decks square off in the championship game. Due to the burden that the combination of The Dragonpit (Tales from the Red Keep, 74) and Threat from the North (Princes of the Sun, 56) places on the rest of the competitive environment, we have decided to break this combination by placing both of these cards on the restricted list.

Two other cards are also being restricted at this time. The first is Harrenhal (Ancestral Home, 78), which has been a pervasive neutral meta-defining card for more than a year, and we felt that increasing its opportunity cost by adding it to the restricted list would make the metagame more interesting for players to navigate. The final inclusion is the Valyrian Steel Link (Here to Serve, 117), a check against both a return to dominance by Maester decks, and against an overly efficient neutral draw engine.

The new errata in this update addresses two relatively one-dimensional decks that tend to reduce the game to a “you either have a solution or you don’t” state, which many players found unsatisfying. The errata to Viserys Targaryen (Kings of the Sea, 36) places a limit on how far his attachments can carry a player toward victory, ensuring that a deck built around him has a second dimension to seal the deal. The errata to Snakeskin Veil (Called by the Conclave, 54) was made to prevent the use of this card, in conjunction with trait manipulation, to create a practically untouchable version of the already “cannot be killed” Beric Dondarrion (Illyrio's Gift, 17).

With these adjustments, we hope you find the first edition metagame as interesting and enjoyable as possible for the World Championship and Stahleck events. It’s been a pleasure and an honor working on this first edition of the game for each of you over the past 10 years, and I sincerely hope you will continue the journey with us into the game’s second edition.

In the first week of November hundreds of the best players around the world will begin arriving in Roseville, Minnesota to participate in the 2015 World Championships. The 2015 Regional Championship season is drawing to a close. But with an end comes a new beginning, and that means National Championships are starting to occur around the world. This year’s National Championship season is larger than it’s ever been, with more than 100 National Championships across eight games and more than thirty countries! As players start traveling to these awesome events, we bring you an FAQ and tournament rules update.

All changes from today’s announcement are effective July 29th, 2015 unless otherwise noted.

A New Game Arrives

New A Game of Thrones FAQ and Tournament Rules are Available

Whispers start in the shadows. Then they become rumors swirling about the streets of King’s Landing and eventually, they spread across Westeros. Those who give heed before whispers become something more are rewarded. Those who do not risk failure, and worse.

Don’t be caught off guard at your next A Game of Thrones: The Card Game tournament, read the new FAQ (pdf, 2.3 MB) and tournament rules (pdf, 1.5 MB) before venturing to your local game store.

These changes will go into effect on July 29th, 2015.

A Word from the Developers

Hello A Game of Thrones players,

One of the great qualities of the Living Card Game format is a game that evolves over time. There are a number factors that drive this evolution in card games: new products that add cards to the environment, cards leaving the environment through rotation or restriction, and finally the natural evolution of a metagame as players attempt to anticipate and adapt to what they feel other players are (and will be) doing.

With the announcement of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Second Edition and the completion of The Wardens cycle, the A Game of Thrones LCG has reached a unique place where we now have the complete card pool — every card that will ever be a part of this edition of the game is now available. Additionally, the first edition has no rotation policy, so the environment will not churn with the exit of a block of cards. And while Regional Championship data has shown that the game has a remarkably adaptive and resilient metagame, it does still require attention from time to time to ensure that major events like Gen Con and the World Championships are played in a field that is as diverse and enjoyable as possible.

To that end, we are releasing FAQ 5.5 to set the table, so to speak, for the final North American championship at Gen Con later this summer. In preparing this document, we have reviewed data and feedback from both the Store and Regional Championship seasons, and simultaneously working with playtesters, to identify places where the environment has grown stagnant. From there, we have implemented a small number of surgical adjustments with the aim of refreshing the metagame.

To quickly look at some of the reasoning behind these changes, let’s take a look at how this FAQ affects each of
the Houses:

We’ll start with Greyjoy, as Warship decks — built around either Longship Maiden's Bane (A Hidden Agenda, 105) or the Naval Escort (A Sword in the Darkness, 48) — were probably the decks that people were most concerned about as a dominant force in the metagame. As both of these cards were already on the restricted list, an errata was in order, and we found a relatively clean solution that works similarly on both cards, essentially limiting their interactions, so that instead of working with any Warship location, these cards now only work with other unique Warship locations. This puts a ceiling on the STR boosts these decks can generate, and also checks their efficiency, but does not fundamentally change the spirit of either card.

Next, we’ll turn our eyes to House Stark, the other faction in which an already restricted card, Meera Reed (Tourney for the Hand, 2), has been treated with an errata. For House Stark, Meera Reed had become the restricted card of choice, appearing in an overwhelming number of Stark decks and effectively pushing out other restricted cards. To bring her closer to the rest of the field, we have changed Meera’s “Any Phase” ability with a standard “Response” effect, that basically means she now has to follow the standard game rules for bringing a card out of shadows. As an added benefit to the balance implications, this change simplifies Meera, and makes a number of interactions that had required additional clarification in the Q&A section considerably easier to understand.

Houses Lannister and Targaryen are both in a pretty good place, although one card for each House was identified as a little too much of an easy auto-include in the current metagame: Harry the Riverlands (Forgotten Fellowship, 3) and To Be a Dragon (Sacred Bonds, 48), which is particularly nasty in conjunction with The Aftermath. To better challenge each of these Houses, these cards have both been added to the restricted list.

House Martell features a trade of two cards, with the Princes of the Sun Red Viper (Princes of the Sun, 1) being added to the restricted list, and A Game of Cyvasse (A Change of Seasons, 57) coming off the list. This change should cause players to re-evaluate the House and lead to some fresh Martell schemes at GenCon.

The final faction, House Baratheon, was underperforming relative to the rest of the field, and for that reason no changes were made to their card pool. The reasoning here is that as each of the other Houses was presented with a new challenge, the Baratheons should be able to make some headway in closing the gap.

In addition to the faction specific changes mentioned above, a couple cards have also been removed from the restricted list to add additional considerations to the metagame. The first is The Conclave (Called by the Conclave, 57), which helps to reinvigorate Maester decks that have been a bit of an afterthought in the current meta. Second, we have removed Crossing the Mummer’s Ford (Spoils of War, 20) from the restricted list — the errata on the card still stands — to make River plots a better option.

The 2015 A Game of Thrones: The Card Game North American Championships are split across two tournaments: Joust and Melee. 2015 World Champs Registration

Everything You Need to Know for June 15th

Update: All events are SOLD OUT. Check back at 23:59 CST on August 17th when we release any unclaimed reserved tickets.

Three weeks ago, we announced the dates for 2015 World Championships and a new process for registering for our largest event of the year. In order to make sure everyone has a full understanding of registration before tickets go on sale June 15th, we’re posting today to give you an in-depth guide for registering.

2015 Registration

Registration for the 2015 World Championships goes live at 12:00 PM CST on June 15th at https://fantasyflightgames.thundertix.com/events. 2015 World Championships registration will be handled entirely through this website. There will be no on-site registration.

Registration this year is a two-part process. In the first step, you will have the option to purchase one of four different types of passes: a one event pass, a two event pass, a three event pass, or a four event pass. Each pass gains you access to the weekend's festivities, as well as the indicated number of World Championship events. Each World Championship and its elimination rounds are one event for registration purposes. (Even though the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Second Edition War of the Five Kings tournament is not a World Championship, you must register for it in the same manner as the World Championships. This is the only side event players must preregister for.)

A single event pass will cost $60. Each additional event you play in will cost an extra $10, up to a total of $90 (four events). You do not need to register for any side events ahead of time, and all side events will be free to play in (except for the War of the Five Kings). Please be aware that participants in the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Draft Championship will be charged an additional fee on site ($15) to cover the cost of the draft sets that will be provided.

We have reserved a number of seats for our U.S. Regional Champions, North American Champions, and select National Champions from around the globe; all non-reserved seats for the 2015 World Championships will be made available on a first come, first serve basis.

This open phase of registration will end as soon as all non-reserved tickets are sold.

Beginning at 11:59 PM CST on August 17th, if any of the seats reserved for our U.S. Regional and National Champions remain open, we will reopen registration, and they will be made available to the public.

This final phase of registration will end October 2nd or immediately when all tickets are sold.

Getting Started—Part One

Head to the registration site and click on the “Continue” button for the number of main events you want to participate in. For example, if want to play in the Android: Netrunner and Warhammer 40,000: Conquest World Championships, you would select the World Championship Weekend 2 Event Pass. If you wanted to play in all of the A Game of Thrones tournaments (Draft, Melee, and Joust World Championships, as well as the Second Edition War of the Five Kings tournament), you would select the World Championship Weekend 4 Event Pass.

We recommend checking the 2015 World Championship schedule before purchasing a pass.

On the next screen, double check that you have selected the correct ticket you wish to purchase and make sure that you have selected a quantity of “1.” Then click on the “Continue” button. Be aware that you will have only 7 minutes to fill out payment information. Do not click on the “Continue” button until you have your credit card and address ready.

Enter your full name and email in the labeled fields. If you have used ThunderTix before, you can look up your information using your email. Fill out your credit card information and address as you would with any other order online.

Important: Do not click on the “Confirm Order” button on the bottom of the screen until you have entered a T-shirt size! If you do not enter a T-shirt size, we cannot guarantee you will receive a shirt that fits. Finally, leave the box marked “I’d like to add this customer…” checked so that we can contact you via email with any important updates. We cannot guarantee you will receive timely information for World Championships if you uncheck this box.

Shortly after confirming your order, you should receive a confirmation email. You have not finished registering for your World Championships at this point! Double check your order to make sure you received the pass you wanted. Then you will need to register for specific events using the coupon included in your email.

Registering for Individual Tournaments—Part Two

To register for specific events, click on the event listings for the games you wish to participate in. You can register for a number of events equal to the event pass you bought. For example, if you purchase a 2 Event Pass, you can register to participate in two events. Registering for each individual tournament will be similar to the earlier process.

When you select a particular tournament, you will have to again choose a quantity. However, this time you will also have to enter your full name before continuing.

Note: The price will be listed at $100. Do not worry! The coupon code you received in your email will reduce that price to $0.

On the payment page you will again have seven minutes to complete the process. Enter your coupon code in the coupons box just below the event description and price. As soon as you click on the “Apply” button you should see the price change to $0. Then fill out your personal and payment information again.

Make sure to reenter your T-shirt size and then click on the “Confirm Order” button.

If you bought a 2, 3, or 4 Event Pass, you will have to repeat this process for each additional event beyond the first. The code you receive in your email will work for each event you register for.

National and U.S. Regional Champions

National Champions and U.S. Regional Champions should contact organizedplay@fantasyflightgames.com for access to their reserved spots. We will reply with access to your reserved spot, and the process for registering will be the same as the registration process outlined above.

Reminder: The spot reserved for National and U.S. Regional Champions is only in the game for which they won their tournament. National and U.S. Regional Champions must still register for other events on their own.

Side Events

All side events at 2015 World Championships are free to anyone with a World Championship pass. If you have registered for at least one Championship event or the War of the Five Kings tournament, you can play in any of the side events. However, side events do have limited space, and entry will be limited to a first come, first served basis.

Note: Draft side events will require players to purchase their own product from the Fantasy Flight Games Center.

Registration for 2015 World Championships opens next Monday, June 15th, at 12:00 PM CST. Tickets will be in high demand, and we recommend registering as soon as possible to guarantee your spot in the tournaments of your choice. The Flower of Knighthood

Throughout the Wardens cycle, the Rainbow Guard trait has been gaining strength and synergies. With the release of The Blue Is Calling, all seven members of Renly Baratheon’s Rainbow Guard are present: the Knight of Flowers (Secrets and Schemes, 1), Brienne of Tarth (A Deadly Game, 21), Ser Robar Royce (Secrets and Schemes, 2), Ser Bryce Caron (The Valemen, 41), Ser Emmon Cuy (A Time for Wolves, 61), Ser Parmen Crane (House of Talons, 81), and Ser Guyard Morrigen (The Blue Is Calling, 101).

Two members of the Rainbow Guard are equally powerful whether they fight alongside their Sworn Brothers or elsewhere. The Knight of Flowers can suddenly come out of the shadows in order to save a unique character from being killed or discarded. Brienne of Tarth forces your opponent to either grant you a power or forgo his ability to play event cards during the round. With such powerful abilities, both of these characters could find places in a House Baratheon deck, even without the other Rainbow Guard members.

The other knights that make up the Rainbow Guard, however, become dramatically more powerful when they join company with each other. Ser Bryce Caron grants renown to any Rainbow Guard character. Ser Robar Royce grants deadly to all Rainbow Guard characters while he’s participating in a challenge. After you win a challenge with any Rainbow Guard character, you can stand Ser Guyard Morrigen and give him a power icon. You can increase the power of those power challenges by raising your claim with Ser Emmon Cuy. And once all your challenges are complete, Ser Parmen Crane stands all of your Rainbow Guard characters so they count their STR for the dominance phase. Of course, the cost to bring all of these characters into play is high, but who better to unite the Rainbow Guard than Renly Baratheon (Kings of the Storm, 2)?

The power of the fully gathered Rainbow Guard is certainly impressive, and you can capitalize on your gains even more by equipping some of these knights with Margaery's Favor (The Blue Is Calling, 102). This attachment can only be given to a Rainbow Guard character or Renly Baratheon, but when you win a challenge with the attached character, you can draw a card. Additional card draw is the lifeblood of any deck that focuses on a large team of characters like the Rainbow Guard, so Margaery’s Favor can certainly find a place in bringing more cards into your hand. In addition, because the Rainbow Guard are Knights as well, you use Bitterbridge Encampment (House of Talons, 82) to search for additional Rainbow Guard characters and bring them straight to your hand.

Finally, you can steal your opponent’s power and increase your own STR with a single event included in this Chapter Pack. By playing The Stag and Rose (The Blue Is Calling, 103) after you win a power challenge by four or more STR, you can move a power from an opponent’s card to one of your Baratheon characters. Until the end of the phase, that character gains an additional STR for each power on it. Naturally, you’ll get the greatest STR increase if you target a character that already has a lot of power. Renly Baratheon could be an ideal target, as well as any character frequently enhanced by Ser Bryce Caron. With the fully united strength of the Rainbow Guard, you can lead House Baratheon to its rightful place as the rulers of Westeros!

A New Beginning

The Blue Is Calling is the final release for the first edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game. Although this Chapter Pack marks the completion of the first edition, it’s far from the end of your time in Westeros. We’ve already announced the second edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, which will be released this summer. Events for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game at the FFG 2015 World Championships

Recently, we announced the FFG 2015 World Championships, held November 4th - 8th at our Fantasy Flight Games Center, here in Roseville, Minnesota. This year, our World Championships have been expanded to encompass five full days of gaming and accommodate our growing catalog of games, but that’s not the only important change coming to this year’s World Championships.

Last November, we announced the upcoming second edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, to be released for the first time at Gen Con Indy 2015. We also announced at that time that we would continue Organized Play support for the first edition through the end of 2015. Now, at the 2015 World Championships, we have the unique privilege of celebrating the long life of the game’s first edition, while welcoming the new second edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game.

The End of an Era

The first edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game has been a flagship game for Fantasy Flight. It was our very first LCG®, and it ran successfully for the past eleven years, but at this point, the first edition is starting to show its age. We wanted this game to continue for many more years to come, so we made the decision to return to the game’s roots and release a second edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game. (For more information on the transition and the reasons behind it, read Nate French’s letter to the community.)

Although the first edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game will no longer receive OP support after the 2015 World Championships, we wanted to make sure that the final tournament for the first edition received the support and love that it deserved. We also wanted to ensure that the prestige of the last World Champion for the first edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game remained undiminished. To that end, the 2015 World Championships for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Joust, Melee, and Draft will be for the game’s first edition.

A New Beginning

While we want to give the final first edition World Championship its proper time in the spotlight, we certainly don’t want to relegate the second edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game to an inferior status. Because of this, we will hold a unique, special tournament to introduce the second edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game to the Organized Play catalog, entitled The War of Five Kings tournament. The War of Five Kings tournament will be your first chance to participate in a major, constructed tournament for the second edition of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game. In fact, because this event is so important to us, The War of Five Kings tournament will be the only ticketed, non-World Championship event at the 2015 World Championships.

The War of Five Kings tournament held at the 2015 World Championships will be a full tournament with Swiss rounds leading to a Top Cut, starting on Saturday at 10:00 AM. Although The War of Five Kings tournament does not bear the title of World Championship, it will receive full prize support, including a promotional alternate art card that will be included with the set of alt art cards given to all attendees of the 2015 World Championships. What’s more, the champion of The War of Five Kings tournament will have the opportunity to design a champion card for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, alongside the first edition World Champions.

Pre-registration is necessary for The War of Five Kings tournament at the 2015 World Championships. Pre-registration for the 2015 World Championships, including this tournament, will begin at 12:00 PM CST on June 15th at https://fantasyflightgames.thundertix.com/events. If you’re craving even more of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Second Edition, there will be a second edition Melee side event held on Sunday, November 8th. There is no pre-registration for this event; players may register for this event at the World Championships.

FFG's 2015 World Championships

Whatever your game, the FFG World Championships are your chance to prove yourself against the world’s best! Join us this November 4th – 8th in Roseville, MN, to play your favorite game at the very highest level of competition.

What’s more, this year we have changed the registration process for the FFG World Championships as they have grown to five full days of gaming. You can find more details about the schedule and registration later in the article.

Naturally, this five-day event is highlighted by the World Championship tournaments for all of FFG’s Organized Play games:

The FFG World Championships are more than competition, however. They’re the pinnacle of Organized Play and all for which it stands – the chance to enjoy your favorite games within an extended community of enthusiastic gamers, including players and National Champions from around the globe.

Altogether, the FFG World Championships are an extended, five-day, international celebration of FFG’s Organized Play games and the players that make them great!

Why Are the World Championships Five Days Long?

Over the past few years, FFG’s Organized Play program has grown so large that we can’t pack all of our World Championship events into just four days. Last year, we had seven games. In 2015, we are supporting eight games and ten World Championship tournaments, including the World Championships for two exciting new games, Imperial Assault and Star Wars: Armada. Moreover, several of our World Championship tournaments will run long enough that their Swiss and elimination rounds must be split over two days.

A major part of the decision to extend the event’s duration was made to reduce the overlap between our events and ensure that we could give each World Championship tournament the love and attention it’s due.

Additionally, the reduction in the overlap between our World Championship tournaments means that you’ll have more opportunities to compete in your favorite games. Whether you decide to play in the first World Championships for both Star Wars: Armada and Imperial Assault or you hope to subjugate the Seven Kingdoms before conquering the Traxis sector, the decision to extend the World Championships to five days means you can enjoy more events for more of the games you love.

What Is the Event Schedule?

In addition to our World Championship tournaments, we will have a wide variety of side events, including warm-up tournaments, wrap-up tournaments, draft tournaments, X-Wing Epic Play, and more. All these side events are available to attendees for free on a first-come, first-serve basis, and they’re all fully supported with additional prizes.*

*Participants in side event draft tournaments will need to provide their own draft sets.

What Are This Year’s Prizes?

Every World Championships attendee will receive an exclusive World Championships swag bag that features a 2015 World Championships t-shirt, an exclusive deck box, and a set of alternate art cards.

The 2015 World Championship deck box features a soft, durable vinyl exterior and a magnetic clasp. It can hold up to 100 sleeved cards.
Each attendee’s prize bag includes one alternate art card for each of our World Championship games. All players who play through the full Swiss rounds of a World Championship tournament will also receive two additional copies of the alternate art card for that game that was included in the deck box (for a total of three).

The winner of each World Championship tournament earns the coolest prize in gaming – the chance to work with the game’s developers to design a card for release in a future expansion.
Additionally, we will offer custom prizes to the Top 16, Top 8, and Top 4 players of each event (except Call of Cthulhu, for which we will offer custom prizes to the Top 8 and Top 4).

These prizes will be further supplemented by giveaways, side event prizes, and lots of additional loot. You can stay tuned for more information as we will reveal all of our 2015 World Championships prizes in upcoming previews.

Can Anyone Participate?

The 2015 FFG World Championships are open to players of all levels, but the event’s fantastic growth has necessitated that we cap this year’s attendance.

That means that all attendees must pre-register.

There will be no on-site registration.

While this is a change from past events, it’s a necessary and important step to take to ensure that the World Championships are the best possible event that we can run.

This year’s event will still be larger than last year’s, and we are reserving seats for all current and former World Champions of our current games, as well as our U.S. Regional Champions, North American Champions, and select National Champions from the United Kingdom, Australia, and continental Europe.

Why Is This Year’s Attendance Being Capped?

The tremendous growth of our World Championships over the past few years demanded that we make a challenging decision about where to hold our future World Championships.

We could move the World Championships to a convention center or another large venue. However, if we did this, we would be forced to shed many of the personalized touches that have made our World Championships a special and memorable experience for attendees. Or we could continue to host it at the Fantasy Flight Games Center and limit attendance for the event.

We spent a great deal of time considering the advantages and disadvantages of all our options. In the end, we decided to keep the World Championships at the Fantasy Flight Games Center. Just like when we first made our decision to move the World Championships to Minnesota, we decided that our first priority was to focus as much energy as possible toward the quality of the event we’re running.

Hosting the World Championships in our own backyard at the Fantasy Flight Games Center allows us to give the event as much attention as we possibly can. It allows us to work with our international partners to ensure the participation of multiple National Champions, making it a truly global event. It means we can host your games in a space designed specifically for gaming, with bright lighting, clean tables, and immediate access to food and drink. Most importantly, it allows us to devote our utmost attention to our tournament games and every member of the fantastic, close-knit community of players that participate in them.

How Do I Register?

Registration for the 2015 World Championships goes live at 12:00 PM CST on June 15th at https://fantasyflightgames.thundertix.com/events.

You will then have the option to purchase one of four different types of passes: a one event pass, a two event pass, a three event pass, or a four event pass. Each pass gains you acess to the weekend's festivities, as well as the indicated number of World Championship events.

After you have purchased your pass, you will receive an email with your confirmation code. You will use that code to register for the number of World Championship tournaments that you indicated when you paid for your pass. Please be aware that participants in the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Draft Championship will be charged an additional fee to cover the cost of the draft sets that will be provided.

Throughout this initial phase of registration, we will reserve a number of seats for our U.S. Regional Champions, North American Champions, and select National Champions from around the globe; all non-reserved seats for the 2015 World Championships will be made available on a first come, first serve basis.

This open phase of registration will end as soon as all non-reserved tickets are sold.

Beginning August 17th, if any of the seats reserved for our U.S. Regional and North American Champions remain open, we will reopen registration, and they will be made available to the public.

This final phase of registration will end October 2nd or immediately when all tickets are sold.

NOTE: There are a limited number of seats available per tournament. When you pre-register for the World Championships, you must also register for each World Championship tournament that you plan to attend. Your World Championships registration confirmation email will provide you with a code that you can then use to register for your selected events.

NOTE: You do not have to pre-register for side events. These free events are available to World Championships attendees on a first-come, first-serve basis.*

What If I’m a U.S. Regional or World Champion?

If you are a current or former World Champion for any of our current games, thank you for being a part of the Fantasy Flight Games legacy!

World Champions will be allowed to register a week earlier than other attendees. Please contact us at organizedplay@fantasyflightgames.com by June 8th to let us know of your plans to attend. Use the subject header, “World Championships Registration.”

We are reserving a number of seats for our current U.S. Regional Champions. If you are a 2015 U.S. Regional Champion, let us know of your plans to attend; contact us by August 17th at organizedplay@fantasyflightgames.com under the subject header, “World Championships Registration.”

NOTE: U.S. Regional Champions will only have a spot reserved for them in the game in which they are Regional Champion. We encourage Regional Champions to register using the normal registration process if they wish to play in more than one event.

What If I'm a National Champion from Outside North America?

This year, seven of our international partners are sending twenty-eight National Champions to the World Championships, and we will be reserving their seats.

House of Talons Is Now Available for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game

House Arryn plots how it can shape the future from the mountain fastnesses of the Eyrie. In the Reach, Renly Baratheon gathers his Rainbow Guard around him as he marches toward King’s Landing. Dothraki khalasars ride freely across the sweeping grasslands of the Dothraki Sea and House Greyjoy’s raiders ply the waves in their longships.

House of Talons offers new warriors and armies to launch a campaign across Westeros with fire and sword. The House of Talons Chapter Pack is now available for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game at your local retailer and online through our webstore!

Here, you’ll find cards that continue the major themes of the Wardens cycle by offering more support for each House’s powerful, high-cost characters, including new and recognizable characters from A Song of Ice and Fire, like Robert Arryn and Bronze Yohn Royce. You can also expand the power of your trait-based decks and Limited Responses with cards like the new copy of Jhogo. House Targaryen now has a new way to race to victory, as we’ll see below!

Hunters of the Plains

House of Talons introduces a new version of Jhogo (House of Talons, 94), with a Limited Response that can propel you to sudden victory. Jhogo’s ability reads, “Limited Response: After you win a challenge in which Jhogo and at least 2 other Dothraki characters participated as attackers, discard Jhogo to claim X power for your House. X is the number of cards in the losing opponent’s hand. (Limit 1 limited response per round.)” The power of this effect is obvious – you could easily leap forward by four or five power. But of course, you want a way to maximize your potential power gain, while minimizing the chance that your opponent will be able to stop you. Fortunately, House of Talons offers some other cards that can help you accomplish this goal.

To successfully trigger Jhogo, you’ll naturally need at least two other Dothraki characters to participate in the challenge with him. House of Talons offers Eastern Market (House of Talons, 96), a location that you can discard from play to reduce the cost of the next three Dothraki or Mercenary characters you play by one each. With Eastern Market, you’ll have a much easier time marshaling a horde of Dothraki to trigger Jhogo.

You’ll also find the Braided Warrior (House of Talons, 95), a Dothraki character who allows you to search your deck for an attachment after he enters play. Then, by paying the attachment’s cost, you can put it into play attached to a card you control. Naturally, there are several attachments that can help you with your challenges. With the help of Daenerys's Favor (Forgotten Fellowship, 95), you can boost a character’s STR and offer additional icons, while Khal (Ancestral Home, 77) makes one of your characters dangerous during power challenges.

Once you have enough Dothraki characters in play, you need to carefully choose how to make your challenge. Ultimately, you have a much better chance of success if your opponents don’t know your plan until you’re ready to act. To that end, you can keep Jhogo in your hand until you’re ready to make a challenge, and then use Ambush from the Plains (Queen of Dragons, 36) to quickly bring him into play.

In addition, you need to minimize your target opponent’s chance of successfully defending the challenge. Rakharo (The Valemen, 54) is a Dothraki character with stealth, and he can give stealth to another Dothraki character during the challenges phase, potentially enabling you to slip past any foes. You may also use ambush to play Jhogo's Whip (Of Snakes and Sand, 90) onto Jhogo in the challenges phase, allowing you to push two defending characters out of the challenge.

Finally, you need to ensure that you’ll gain the maximum amount of power by triggering Jhogo. The melee format naturally gives you more options for targeting the opponent with the most cards in hand when you declare your key challenge. However, you’ll also want ways to fill your opponent’s hand with cards before you make your key challenge. Counting Favors (Core Set, 203) and The Dragon's Tail (Princes of the Sun, 43) are good ways to quickly fill your opponent’s hand as much as the draw cap allows. For a final push, Much and More (A Harsh Mistress, 78) can add more cards to your opponent’s hand while circumventing the draw cap. With these cards and careful planning, Jhogo could bring substantial support to Daenerys Targaryen’s cause!

The Houses of Westeros snap at each other’s heels, jockeying for position and power. Veiled threats and back alley deals lead the Great Houses closer to open war, even as winter fast approaches. Wherever you look, scavengers prey on the weak and grab whatever scraps they can find. It is a time of bloodshed and hardship, but it may also be the perfect time for you to make your bid for power and the Iron Throne! A Time for Wolves is now available for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game at your local retailer and online through our webstore.

Like the other Chapter Packs in the Wardens cycle, A Time for Wolves continues the cycle’s focus on Limited Responses, trait-based decks, and bringing new benefits to the game’s high-cost, iconic characters from A Song of Ice and Fire. This expansion offers a special focus on the characters hailing from the Vale, including Alayne Stone, Lysa Arryn, Petyr Baelish, and Lyn Corbray. You may gather the men and women of House Arryn or you may throw your support behind another House. The fact remains: this time of turmoil is the perfect opportunity for you to claim the Iron Throne.

The Copper King

When he proclaimed his claim to the throne, Renly Baratheon instituted a new order of knighthood: the Rainbow Guard. These seven knights were tasked with protecting Renly, and were hailed as the flower of chivalry. The cards of the Wardens cycle invite you to field the Rainbow Guard in your own games for the Iron Throne, and in A Time for Wolves, you can travel directly to Renly’s camp as he marched on King’s Landing.

In the end, your goal in A Game of Thrones: The Card Game is to claim enough power to seize the Iron Throne. Your Rainbow Guard can help you accomplish this goal. This Chapter Pack introduces Ser Emmon Cuy (A Time for Wolves, 61), a member of the Rainbow Guard and a Knight. More importantly, Ser Emmon Cuy bears a powerful ability: “During power challenges in which you control at least 1 attacking Rainbow Guard character, raise the Claim value on your revealed plot card by 1.”

Naturally, Ser Emmon Cuy himself meets the conditions for triggering this ability, allowing you to make your power challenges more dangerous to your opponent than ever before. When you combine this ability with cards like Robert Baratheon (Kings of the Storm, 1), Melisandre (Return of the Others, 105) and Shireen Baratheon (Valar Dohaeris, 26), you can take the amount of power you claim each round to unprecedented levels.

A Time for Wolves offers another way for your deck to reliably gain power with Renly's Pavilion (A Time for Wolves, 63). After you reveal a plot card, you may kneel Renly’s Pavilion to claim one power for your House. In addition, if it is summer, you also receive one gold. Without your opponent’s intervention, you’ll be able to gain an additional power every round from Renly’s Pavilion, bringing your power total even higher.

Of course, a deck focusing on the Rainbow Guard and claiming power quickly is not without weaknesses. Most notably, many of these characters lack the subtlety to possess an intrigue icon, leaving you vulnerable to having your hand attacked. You’ll find a way to shore up this weakness in the Camp Follower (A Time for Wolves, 62). This character is inexpensive and bears an intrigue icon, and although she starts at only one STR, she gains one additional STR for each Knight character in play!

House Baratheon by far possesses the most Knights in A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, fielding more than twice as many as most other Houses and gaining more with the addition of the new Rainbow Guard. The Camp Follower even gains STR from your opponent’s Knights. Even though this character is vulnerable to cards that target Allies, she can quickly become a force to be reckoned with.

Stake Your Claim

In A Time for Wolves, you can support the claim of Renly Baratheon and field a massive army of Knights and Lords. Or perhaps you will tie your fortunes to House Arryn, moving out of the Vale and bringing the winds of change to Westeros. Whichever Great House you support, the time to make your move is here. Rise above the scavengers, and lay claim to your birthright: the Iron Throne!
