The second edition of Descent: Journeys in the Dark is an epic board game of adventure, exploration, and battle for two to five players. Filled with noble heroes, deadly monsters, magical relics, and dangerous quests, Descent: Journeys in the Dark invites you to undertake heroic exploits in the fantasy realm of Terrinoth. With the second edition of Descent, the classic game of dungeon-delving adventure has been reinvented and refined with an epic campaign system and fast-paced rules for tactical movement and combat.
During a game, you and up to three other players play as heroes through the quests of a campaign, accumulating items and gaining new skills. Opposing you, a single player plays as the evil overlord, commanding his monsters and hindering the heroes in any way possible. If you don’t have time for an entire campaign, you can play any of the included quests as a single adventure, giving you a variety of ways to enjoy Descent. With thirty-nine detailed miniatures, over two-hundred cards, almost fifty double-sided map tiles, and more, Descent: Journeys in the Dark immerses you in the unlimited adventure of Terrinoth!
From simpler rules for determining line of sight to faster setup of each encounter, Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition delivers a tense, satisfying experience with minimal player downtime. Defense dice make every battle exciting, while shorter quests with natural stopping points mean that even the busiest group can now fit Descent into a varied night of gaming. Rather than collecting threat tokens to spend on traps, minions, and other nasty tricks, the overlord simply plays cards from his hand based on their triggering conditions. Each player begins by choosing one of four archetypes: Mage, Warrior, Scout, or Healer. Each archetype offers multiple classes, each providing a distinct play experience. As a Warrior, for example, you may take the role of the valiant Knight, protecting your physically weaker companions, or you can play as a mighty Berserker, cutting a swath of destruction through your foes.
With the second edition’s enhanced experience system, you also have total control over your character’s growth and development. Each class has a unique deck of cards, and setting your hero on a path to greatness is as simple as selecting your starting Class cards. As you gain more experience throughout the campaign, you’ll be able to spend experience on additional skills, adding to your hero’s available abilities. For example, once you’ve chosen the Warrior archetype and the Berserker class, you can concentrate on taking down multiple foes at once or focus on dealing devastating blows to a single combatant.
