Journey to Oldtown Is Now Available for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game

“I shall be the Kingslayer till I die.”
–Ser Jaime Lannister, A Feast for Crows

New intrigues consume the Great Houses of Westeros, and new players enter the game. The Greyjoys and the Martells make their first ventures into the game of thrones, and although the fires of war have dimmed, the Seven Kingdoms are still as deadly as ever. Death is a cruel reality for everyone, and every House must forge new alliances in order to survive. Bring the next chapter of the unfolding saga to A Game of Thrones: The Card GameJourney to Oldtown, the second Chapter Pack in the Flight of Crows cycle is now available at your local retailer and online through our website!

Like the other Chapter Packs of the Flight of Crows cycle, Journey to Oldtown focuses on the events of A Feast for Crows, the fourth book in A Song of Ice and Fire. Along with that thematic focus, this expansion introduces new incentives to forge alliances between factions and new cards featuring the bestow keyword. Of course, Journey to Oldtown has its own unique cards to offer as well—including a brand-new agenda that promises to revolutionize deckbuilding by giving you a location of your choice at the beginning of the game.

The Kingslayer

Though the Great Houses clash over the Iron Throne, the characters of A Song of Ice and Fire play out their own personal dramas against this backdrop. In fact, few characters in A Song of Ice and Fire are as compelling as Jaime Lannister. With a legacy tarnished by the sins of his past, Jaime’s path has led him along a journey toward redemption. Still, none can say whether he will ever fully wash away the title of Kingslayer that has haunted him since the death of Mad King Aerys.

With this Chapter Pack, the Title of Kingslayer (Journey to Oldtown, 30) comes to A Game of Thrones: The Card Game as a Lannister attachment. The first thing you’ll notice is that Kingslayer can currently only be attached to five characters in the game—only a character with the Kingsguard trait, such as Ser Jaime Lannister (Lions of Casterly Rock, 5) or  Ser Osmund Kettleblack (The Red Wedding, 69) can become a Kingslayer. Still, once you’ve declared one of your characters the Kingslayer, you have the power to make good on that promise at any point.

As an Action in any phase of the game, you can kneel your Kingslayer character to kill a character that has two or more power. Characters collecting power with the renown keyword represent some of the most powerful and influential characters in the game… but with the Kingslayer attachment, you have the power to snuff out one of these characters’ lives with a single stroke of your blade. Still, there is a limit to the power of the Kingslayer—its ability can only be triggered once per game!

What’s more, any opponent would have plenty to gain from bringing the Kingslayer to justice. Whenever a character with Kingslayer leaves play, each of your opponents gains two power! It’s plain to see that if you choose to declare one of your characters as the Kingslayer, you have two avenues for maintaining your advantage once you’ve slain your target. Either you keep your Kingslayer alive and out of enemy hands, or you find some way to wash away the stain of injustice by removing the Kingslayer attachment after you’ve used it.

The second Lannister card in this expansion also rewards you for reaching new measures of carnage and death by calling more of the bloodthirsty Clansmen into play—especially the new Black Ears (Journey to Oldtown, 29). Black Ears are a powerful force in military challenges, and after a character is killed on either side, you can pay two gold to put the Black Ears into play from your hand.

Obviously, gaining a new character at a moment’s notice can be useful for tipping the balance of the game in your favor, but the Black Ears work especially well with Tyrion Lannister (Lions of Casterly Rock, 2). After you win a military challenge, you can return Black Ears to your hand with Tyrion Lannister, then pay two gold to bring them back into play after claim is applied. Alternatively, you might reveal Wildfire Assault (Core Set, 26) when you trigger "The Rains of Castamere" (Lions of Casterly Rock, 45), killing characters and bringing the Black Ears into play to win a military challenge and inflict further destruction!
